Five

Twenty-four hours later, almost to the minute, Justin called her.

“Did you find out anything?” Shanai asked, her words rushing out.

There was a slight hesitation before Justin spoke, and in that flash of a second, Shanai’s anxiety climbed three notches. “What is it?” she asked. “What do you need to tell me?”

Justin cleared his throat. “My dad got through to a short-wave operator. With no problem, actually. But the guy was too far away to check on your parents himself. It would have taken way too long. So he sent one of his friends. His friend just got word back to him, and he contacted my dad right away.”

“How are they? My parents. Are they fine?” Shanai’s hand clenched her phone to her ear.

Another slight hesitation.

“Justin! What is it?” she cried. “Tell me.”

“Okay. Your dad is sick. They think he may have had a stroke—”

“What?” Instant tears welled up. “A stroke?”

“They’re not sure. The man said something about parasites, too.”

“Where is he?”

“That’s the thing,” Justin continued. “Your dad won’t go to a hospital.”

“What? Why not? Can’t they get transportation?” Shanai’s voice rose to a fever pitch.

“No, that’s not it. This guy could have helped transport him.”

“Then why didn’t Dad go?”

“Because he won’t.”

“What?”

“He won’t go. He told my dad’s contact that if he expects the locals to come to his clinic, then he needs to use it himself.”

“That’s insane! He’s the doctor! He can’t doctor himself!”

“He has a local med student helping him.”

Shanai’s hands went cold. “A med student? That’s who’s treating my dad?”

“I guess so.”

“What does my mom say?”

“Shanai, I think you need to talk to her yourself.” Justin cleared his throat again. “The man gave your mom an international cell phone.”

“There’s no service there.”

“I know. But she can use it if she travels just under an hour. She’ll be calling you in two hours.”

“Two hours from now?”

“Yes.”

Shanai’s legs wobbled, and she sank onto the couch. “She’ll call my phone.”

“Yes.”

She bent forward and began rocking gently back and forth.

“You still there?” Justin asked.

“Still here,” she said, her voice barely audible.

“I’m coming over.”

“No,” she said, wanting to be alone.

“I’m coming over,” he repeated and hung up.

Shanai dropped her cell onto the couch and sprang up. She paced around the dining room table, her mind a blur of thoughts. A stroke? Her father was healthy. And strong. She’d always thought him invincible. He and her mother had practically single-handedly built a clinic in the middle of nowhere. Nowhere! A person who could do that didn’t have strokes.

She bit the inside of her lip as she continued pacing. And her mother. Why wasn’t she insisting he go to a hospital? What was the matter with her? Had the African heat destroyed her thinking ability? You didn’t let a person who’d just had a stroke call the shots. The both of them were crazy!

She took a quick breath and fought against the sobs that threatened to erupt. Acting like a child wouldn’t help her now. She had to think.

Maybe if she went to Tanzania herself, she could convince her father to get proper treatment.
